Abstract
8356. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. April 6. Field carriages. - Relates to ranging and pointing gear of the kind in which ranging and pointing pinions, under the control of worm gearing carried on the cradle and carriage respectively, engage with a floating segmental rack which remains stationary when the ranging-gear is actuated, and moves with the gun when the pointing-gear is actuated. The invention consists in combining, with ranging and pointing gear of this class, a member carrying the sight and connected with the pointing- gear in the manner described in Specification 19,926/08. The pointing-pinion may be disconnected from its actuating-gear and connected with a loading-gear by a clutch device. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the floating segmental. rack F mounted in guides in a part depending from the cradle B<1>, the ranging- pinion d operated through worm gearing from a hand-wheel D, and the pointing - pinion c operated through worm-gearing from a handwheel on a shaft E<1>. The sight is mounted on a trunnion sleeve G<1>, from which depends a toothed arc G, with which engages a pinion g on the pointing-shaft e<1>, for. the purpose of causing synchronous movements of the gun and sight during the pointing operation. The shaft D<2> of the ranging hand-wheel D extends through the right-hand trunnion and carries a worm d<3>, which actuates a range-dial D. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the pointing-pinion e may be disconnected from the pointing worm-wheel EX by a clutch device of the kind described in the above-mentioned Specification and connected with a quick-loading gear acting upon a chainwheel e<1Î>. The pinion g is in this case carried on a sleeve G<2> on the worm-wheel E<Î> so that the sight may be actuated independently of the gun during the loading movement.
