Field carriages. - Relates to elevating and sighting apparatus for guns with an independent line of sight, of the type in which the corrections for angle of site and range are made by different gunners, and consists in a device by which, in indirect firing, both operations may be performed by the same gunner. In the example shown, the support a, c, carrying the sighting - apparatus is rotatable round the trunnion axis x-x by the gearing e, f, g, h. The elevating - screw n is actuated by the shaft i through the bevel - wheels k, m, the elevation being indicated by the graduated range wheel q riding loosely on the shaft i and rotated by the pinion gearing with a rack d on the support a, c. To aim the gun, one gunner maintains the supports a, c horizontal, as indicated by the level p, by means of the gearing e, f, g, h, while another gunner first rotates the graduated wheel n, riding loosely on the shaft i, by means of the gearing v, u, t, until the position of the pointer r corresponds to the known angle of site, and then clevates the gun by means of the gearing i, k, m, n until the graduation on the range wheel q corresponding to the known range is opposite the pointer r, thus adding the two corrections algebraically. The apparatus is employed for direct firing in the usual manner.
