Abstract
372,403. Ordnance mountings. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd. and LEE, H. W., Vickers House, Broadway, Westminster. Feb. 7, 1931, No. 3969. [Class 92 (i).] Relates to elevating gear for two or more guns in which, during the elevation for range, the guns are automatically given different angles of tangent elevation to suit their respective muzzle velocities. According to the invention, the guns A, A<1> are elevated by a common operating means, such as a handwheel or motor driving a shaft e<3>, which actuates the elevating shaft E‹ of one gun directly and the elevating shaft E<1> of the other gun through the medium of a gear device F<2> which has the velocity ratio E + #E/E. This ratio is stated to be constant for usual values of R, E being the angle of tangent elevation for the range R when the muzzle velocity is V, and E + #E the corresponding angle for the same range when the muzzle velocity is V + # V. The elevating shafts E‹, E<1> are arranged parallel to the cradle trunnions and each shaft operates through worm gearing upon a pinion engaging the usual arcuate rack on the gun cradle.
