Abstract

586,589. Gun and torpedo fire control. VARIABLE SPEED GEAR, Ltd., and INGOLDBY, M. K. 'Oct. 12, 1937, No. 27737. [Classes 9 (ii), 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A fire control system for use with guns and torpedo tubes to take account of the relative speed of the gun or the like and the target comprises a sight 1, a predictor 23 and gun or the like directing mechanism 63, the movements of the sight in elevation and training being effected by hydraulic swash-plate pump and motor systems 12, 10, 11, 9 respectively controlled by valves or swash-plate angulating means 14, 13. Connections 26, 25 between the sight and the predictor introduce to the predictor the actual movements of the sight, and further connections 29, 27 introduce the rate of change of such movements. The sight is also a range-finder and the range is introduced by a connection 33. The lead angles calculated in the predictor emorge by shafts 35, 34 and are conveyed to the gun or the like by swash-plate pump and motor systems 45, 46 through follow-up hunter gearing. This gearing includes an input gear 36, 37 and an output gear 49, 50 connected by a screwed rotating and sliding shaft 38 which actuates the angulating - member 44 of the swash-plate pump through linkage 41, 43. The lag is measured by an epicyclic gear, the planetary pinions 58 of which are mounted in a swivelling casing 56 and engage a wheel 53 fast with the wheel 50 and a wheel 55 feathered on the shaft 38. The movements of the casing 56 are returned to the predictor, as a measure of the lag, through shaft 61. The output shaft 48 of the follow-up device drives the gun or the like training shaft 82 and the output shaft 64 drives the elevating shaft 83. The gear-box 63 through which these elevating and training drives' are conveyed is. shown in section in Fig. 2 and includes epicyclic gears 71, 77 to ensure that elevation movements are unaffected by training and vice versa. In a modification, the swash-plate motors 5, 6 are controlled by reversing valves, the separate pumps 9, 10 being replaced by a single pump. The swash-plate motor 46 is controlled by a similar reversing valve operated by a cam on the swivelling casing 56.
