Variable-speed chain gearing.-In change-speed gearing, particularly for use on motor-vehicles, the driving-shaft 4 is surrounded by shafts 6, 6<Î> arranged on a circle and mounted in a rotatable casing 2. The shafts 6 are driven from the shaft 4 by a train of chain gearing, the reverse shaft 6x being driven from one of the shafts 6 by toothed gearing. By means of a cord 15, the casing 2 can be rotated so as to bring any one of the countershafts into line with the driven shaft 11, each of the countershafts being provided with a clutch member 14 adapted to be engaged by a member 13 on the shaft 11. A sliding frame 10 is provided with keys 9, which engage bosses 2<Î> on the casing 2 to hold the casing in the proper position for obtaining transmission. In a modification, the shaft 11 drives a shaft in alinement with the shaft 4, clutches being arranged so that a direct drive can be obtained and the chain gearing cut out. Each of the shafts 6 may be made to slide against the action of a spring, as shown in Fig. 4, the clutch member 13 being provided with a projection 13x, which moves the shaft on the clutch being brought into engagement, and thereby throws out a clutch 22 from one of the chain-wheels, thus throwing out of action the following countershafts of the train of chain gearing.
