Abstract

19,498. Cushing, S. D. Sept. 1. Projectiles. --Relates to devices for tracing the flight of a projectile by the smoke or flame produced by a liquid which is expelled by centrifugal force from a chamber in the projectile. According to the invention, (1) the liquid contains the colouring-matter in solution and not merely in suspension; (2) the exit holes D are placed at the points of maximum diameter of the chamber a instead of only approximately so; (3) the exit hole is made in a taper plug K which is pressed in a tapered hole J in the body of the projectile; and (4) the chamber a has partitions P, or ribs or irregular walls R, to communicate rotation to the liquid. The exit hole is closed as heretofore by a seal S, and may also be closed by a valve which is thrown open by centrifugal force or by inertia when the projectile is discharged from a gun.
