Abstract

Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates to projectiles charged with calcium carbide and water, and consists in bringing the water and carbide in contact with each other at the moment the projectile is discharged from the gun; a high pressure and a high temperature are reached after a given time and cause an explosion of great force, which bursts the shell in the construction shown in Fig. 1. or detonates an explosive charge, in the construction shown in Fig. 3. The water 3 is made to flow into the carbidechamber 6 by the pressure of the gun gases which acts through a perforated plate 9 on a piston 1 and breaks open the wall 5 of the water-chamber.
