Abstract
22,161. Niehoff, E. Oct. 31. Projectiles, ordnance; fuses for projecliles; torpedoes and explosive mines.-Projectiles for naval use, and torpedoes and mines, are provided with means for exploding the charge should the projectile &c. sink below a certain depth, the invention being shown as applied to a projectile. An air space 2 is provided with a valved outlet 5, and an inlet passage 17, closed while passing down the bore of the gun by a hinged plate 13 with side wings 12, pressed outwards by a spring 15. In the event of the projectile entering the water, the winged plate 13 prevents the ingress of water until the projectile is spent and begins to sink. When the pressure of the water becomes sufficiently great, the plunger 19 is pressed back and the water enters through the perforated walls of a casing 18 and ignites the water fuses 21, the air being expelled through the valve 5.
