Abstract
6022. Keeson, H. V. Cuthbert-. April 22. Projectiles.-Relates to projectiles so constructed. as to prevent ricochet on striking water. According to this invention, the front of the projectile, which has an inverted conoidal member, is covered by a perforated contour cap into which, when the projectile grazes, water is admitted but cannot escape, thereby bursting the cap and exposing the front of the projectile. The perforated cap 1 is held on by a screw 10 mounted on a pillar 4, which extends from the conoidal member 5 and is weakened at the base 7. A circular channel is formed between the member 5 and the end 6 of the body of the projectile. A valvular lining 3 consisting of layers of canvas or silk is clamped between the screw 10 and an inertia member 9, which rests upon sleeves 8 surrounding the pillar. During flight, the lining bulges out into the perforations 12 and fills them up. The holes 12 are inclined as shown, so as to scoop up the water, which, after passing into the cap, is shut in by the valvular lining. The Provisional Specification states also that, for protection during handling, two spring wire hoops are provided over the cap.
