Abstract

16,544. Schneider, E. July 18. Projectile fuses.-Relates to fuses for combined shrapnel and common shell provided with a setting-piece for determining the manner in which the shell is to explode, and consists in the use of a setting-piece adjustable like a screw. As shown in Fig. 1, the igniting-devices e, e<1>, f, f<1> are carried by a setting-piece b adjustable screw-wise within the fuse body a to the extent of 180 degrees. In the position shown, the flash from the igniter e, e' is shut off from the time rings h, g, and the impact igniter explodes the detonator c through a retarding - patch d. If the piece b is turned through 180 degrees, a ball c<2> is released and dislodged by centrifugal force during flight, and the flash from the impact igniter passes to the detonator without retardation. If the ring h is turned until a port in it registers with a port a<2>, the time fuse comes into play and, during flight, ignites the base charge of the shrapnel through passages a<4>, a<5>; or if the piece b has been turned, ignites the detonator c through passages a<3>, b<3>. In a modification, Fig. 5, the time fuse is in the known form of a serpentine, and is pierced at e<x> for the passage of the flash, the position of the hole e<x> determining the time of action.
