Abstract
9429. Menteyne, P. M., and Degaille, P. A. April 18. Breech action, sliding barrel and breechblock.-Relates to recoil-operated guns, and consists in a special magazine cut-off with which is combined a device for holding the breech open either when the magazine is empty or when the cut-off is in the operative position. The cut-off comprises a U-shaped piece 14 sliding on the rear end of the magazine and gripping the upper cartridge between the arm 18 and the spring arm 15. This cut-off can occupy one of two positions, in the lower of which it holds the cartridges below and out of the path of the breech-block. The device for holding the breech open comprises a spring-controlled lever 4 which, at the end of the recoil, engages a lug on the firing-pin and retains it, and the breechblock, until the barrel reaches its forward position. The lever 4 is released by an inclined lug 11 on the barrel which engages a lug 9 on a lever 7, laterally pivoted to the lever 4. This lever 7 has a forwardly-projecting nose 8, which engages a cam-surface 16, 17 on the spring arm 15 of the cut-off. When the cut-off is in its lowered position, or when the magazine is empty so that the spring arm 15 of the cut-off moves inwards, as shown in Fig. 5, the arm 7 is swung sideways so that the lug 9 is not engaged by the lug 11 on the barrel, and hence the lever 4 remains in engagement with the firing-pin, and holds the breech open.
