Abstract

1217. Bonn, A. van. Jan. 17. Valves closing with rush of fluid; shocks, preventing; alarms.-A valve adapted to close on the bursting of a conduit is provided with wings upon its circumference to cause the valve to rotate as it closes on its seating and so avoid shock. Fig. 1 shows two valves arranged in one casing. Each valve consists of a disk d sliding upon a nut e threaded on a screwed spindle V. The valve is provided with two sets of wings l, l<1> upon its circumference which cause the valve to rotate as it moves towards its seating n<1>. Normally, the valves rests upon a seating n, but upon the bursting of the conduit in which the valve is placed, the valve is raised to the seat n<1> by the rush of fluid, which then escapes by an outlet u and actuates an alarm. The valve may be operated manually by a wheel on the spindle t, and a cock R is provided to allow the pressures on the two sides of the valve casing to be equalized when necessary. In a modification, the two valves are arranged in a casing with a straight-way passage. Fig. 4 shows a further modification in which a single valve d is employed. The valve is provided with wings l on its circumference, and engages frictionally over a nut e screwed on a fixed threaded stem V. When a rush of fluid takes place, the valve moves towards the seating n<1>, the nut c rotating as it moves along the stem V. When the nut c reaches the stop K, the valve d slides over the nut e until it closes upon the seat n<1>.
