Abstract

25,049. Thorp, T., Thorp, F., and Thorp, H. T. Oct. 28. Atmospheric gas burners; burners, regulating. -Apparatus for regulating simultaneously the supplies of gas and compressed air to burners and of compressed air to the flame, and in which predetermined proportions thereof are maintained, comprises a casing divided into four compartments, namely, gas-inlet, mixing, air-inlet, and air-outlet chambers, and the valves connecting these are operated simultaneously. The device is applicable to calenderrollers, gas - fires, incandescent burners in lanterns, and other burners in enclosed spaces. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, gas passes from a chamber 7, and air from a chamber 9, to the mixing - chamber 8, and the mixture passes by a pipe 15 to the burner. Air also passes from the chamber 9 to a chamber 10, and then by a pipe 16 to the flame. The valves 11, 12, 13 are carried by a common spindle 14. Hit-and-miss valves 19, 20, adjusted by worms 21, 22, are provided on apertured cylinders 17, 18 in which the valves 11, 13 work, and serve to vary the proportion of gas in the mixtures and of the air supplied to the flame. According to a modification shown in Fig. 4, the mixing-chamber is formed between a plate 25 and the cover 27 of the casing, and gas and air pass to this from chambers 31, 36 respectively, through ports 33, 39 in the plate 25. The ports are simultaneously controlled by a rotary sector valve 41 operated by a spindle 53. The mixture passes through a port 47, a passage 46, and a pipe 50 to the burner. Air from the chamber 36 also passes through a port 40 and a chamber 42 in the valve 41 to a chamber 44, and by a pipe 45 to the flame. The pipe 45 may be within the pipe 50, as shown, which arrangement is suitable for calendar-rollers, or the pipes may be separate. The gas-port 33 may be adjusted by means of a slide 34, and the air-port 40 may be similarly adjusted. The gas and air are supplied under constant pressure, regulated by a governor such as described in Specification 22,134/06, [Class 135, Valves &c.].
