Abstract

18,045. Hamilton, B. T. Aug. 19. Gas and explosive-vapour engines, carburetting and governing in. Fig. 1 shows a carburetter for maintaining a mixture of constant strength at all speeds. Mounted in the outer casing A, is a longitudinally-adjustable and preferably hand-operated sleeve B, having a series of tapered and rectangular ports B', B' for controlling the outlet port A' and the air supply which enters through ports E<1> in an adjustable sleeve E respectively. The sleeve E is rotated by the governor through the arm E<2> and other connections (not shown). Liquid fuel is admitted to the mixing-chamber through a passage C formed as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 shows a modification, in which the air supply is admitted through the inlet A<8> by an adjustable sleeve J which also controls the mixture supply to the engine through the port J<1>. Air is admitted to the mixing-chamber in the interior of the sleeve K through ports in the tubular projection A<11> and others K<1> formed in the bottom of the sleeve K. The sleeve K is connected to and partakes of the rotary adjustment imparted to the sleeve J by the arm J<3>. It may also be adjusted in a vertical direction by the hand or governor controlled arm K'. A modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 is described, in which the upper portion of the sleeve B is replaced by a stationary dome, the outlet of which is controlled by a closing-plate carried by a spindle supporting the lower portion of the sleeve. Further modifications are described in which several mixing-chambers are formed in the sleeve B, each chamber having an independent fuel-supply orifice.
