Abstract

11,342. Humphris, F. May 17. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. Air and liquid fuel are supplied to the mixing- chamber E through the inlet port f and the nozzle e<2> respectively, the mixture passing to the carburetter outlet G through the ports f<3>, f<6> in the casing D and the piston valve d<1> respectively. To mix intimately the air and fuel in the chamber E, the air on entering is split up by passing through perforations in a disc e'. The mixing- chamber outlet port f<3>, the carburetter outlet G, and the auxiliary air-supply passage f are controlled by the suction-operated piston valve d', in the interior of which is fitted a perforated partition f<4>. To damp the motion of the piston valve, the spindle d<2> is arranged to work in conjunction with a spindle d<3> carrying a weighted arm, the weights d<4> of which may, if preferred, be replaced by adjustable air vanes. Provision is made to control mechanically the position of the piston valve by means of tappets which engage the ends of the valve spindle. A float chamber is described in connection with the carburetter in which the fuel supply is fed to the chamber through the centre of the float by a needle valve which always remains vertical.
