Abstract

19,828. Broome, F. S. J. Aug. 25. Carding - engines. - Fibres are separated or graded by passing the mixture of fibres through a carding-engine provided with one or more rollers which remove the fibres from the cylinder and discharge them into one or more trunks along which air is drawn and which lead to a settling-chamber. The Figure shows a roller and clearer carding-engine adapted for the purposes of the invention. The fibres may be fed in any suitable manner to the taker-in b, and, after being passed to the cylinder a, are carried past the first worker d and clearer e, and then are acted upon by a roller h which takes off any projecting fibres and discharges them into a trunk j, which leads to one or more settling- chambers in which the fibres are deposited in varying position according to their properties. The roller h works " point to heel " with the cylinder a, and is set with its clothing in close proximity to, but not touching, the clothing of the cylinder. It also works in conjunction with a clearer n, which works " point to point " with the roller, and is set just to engage the clothing of the cylinder and to be in close proximity to that of the roller h. The fibres that are carried past the roller h by the cylinder are operated upon by the remaining workers d and rollers e, and are then acted upon by a roller i, which takes some of them off the cylinder and discharges them into a trunk k. The fibres remaining on the cylinder are doffed in the usual manner and may, if desired, be repassed through the carding - engine. Either of the rollers h, i may be dispensed with, or more than two rollers may be used. The trunks j, k are formed with inspection doors s, t and are formed with their lower edges close to the clothing of the cylinder. The air which is drawn along them is drawn through gaps u, v between the trunk and the casing of the engine. Adjustable plates w, x are used to regulate the size of these gaps. Adjustable plates l, m are provided to aid in the detachment of the fibres from the rollers h, i. The casing p of the carding- engine is formed with partitions 1, 2 to ensure that as far as possible the air drawn along the trunks shall be taken from the room and not from the interior of the caring-engine. Doors y, z are also provided in the casing. The rollers h, i may be applied to carding-engines having fixed or revolving flats. The air drawn along the trunks and through the settling- chambers may be passed through any suitable device to separate the dust &c. from it, before it is returned to the room.
