Carding-engines. - In carding flax, hemp, jute, and similar fibres and their tows, the material is introduced to the cylinder in two or more graded stages so as to be subjected to a gradual attenuation. In the arrangement shown in Fig II, a card-covered roller 1 is introduced between the usual feed-rollers A, B and the main cylinder D. The roller 1 is caused to have a surface speed greater than that of the feed-rollers, but less than that of the main cylinder. A second intermediate roller may be introduced between the first roller and the main cylinder, the surface speeds of the various rollers increasing from the feedroller to the main cylinder. In carding exceptionally matted material, worker and stripper rollers may be arranged on the intermediate rollers. Fig. IV shows such an arrangement. The material is taken from the feed - rollers A, B by the roller 1, which is in turn stripped by the roller 2, the surface speed of which is somewhat greater than that of the roller 1. The material is worked on the roller 2 by groups of workers and strippers 3, 4, and 5, 6. The roller 2 is stripped by rollers 7, 9 travelling slower than the roller 2, and these rollers are in turn stripped by rollers 8, 10 which are stripped by a roller 11 which passes the material on to the main cylinder D. The speeds of the rollers 7, 8, 11 and 9, 10, 11 are successively greater than that of the adjacent roller on the left. The roller 2 may deliver direct to the main cylinder.
