Abstract
22,357. Bamforth, J. G. Oct. 1. Carding-engines. - In a condensing carding- engine, the fleece to be divided passes from the doffer to a roller having a series of annular grooves, into which enter cutting or dividing blades or disks provided with plain or serrated edges. A series of endless belts travel over the roller between the grooves and hold the fleece securely during division. The grooved roller may be formed of a series of spaced collars &c. upon a shaft or roller. The fleece 15, stripped from the doffer 1 by a roller 16, passes under a roller 17 to a breast roller 7, around which extend three sets of belts 6, 6<1>, 6<2>. These belts pass around the roller 3 and are arranged to deliver the slivers to condensing rubbing- leathers 2, 2<1>, 2<2> respectively. Revoluble blades 5 enter grooves 3<1> in the roller 3 and divide the fleece into narrow ribbons, any fibres that do not readily pass to one side or the other being cut or broken. In a modification, the fleece passes direct from the roller 16 to the roller 3, and is held upon the roller 3 during division by short endless belts, one between each pair of blades. The ribbons are conveyed to the rubbing-leathers by separate sets of belts, all of which pass around a roller adjacent to the roller 3. The blades or disks may have an oscillatory or reciprocatory motion instead of being revoluble. The apparatus may be arranged to deliver to any number of condensing- rubbers and bobbins.
