To a, whom, it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE ANDREWS, residing at Buckfastleigh, in the county of Devon, and J ONAS HALEY, residing at Oleckheaton, in the county of York, England, subjects of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, have invented a certain new and usef ul Improvement in Scribblers or Carding-Engines, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in scribblers or carding-engines for carding fiber; and it consists of a new and improved combination and arrangement of workers, strippers, rollers, and cleaners whereby a greater working surface is obtained and a greater amount of fiber can be carded or cleaned in a given time and with less waste than heretofore.

According to our invention the ordinary stripper-rollers are dispensed with and the workers are arranged in pairs around the main cylinder or swift and small stripperrollers are interposed between the workers of each pair. a

In the drawing, which is a fragmentary side elevation of so much of a carding-engine as relates directly to our invention, similar figures refer to similar parts.

According to our invention we employ a suitably-driven main cylinder or swift 1 and lay the fiber thereon in the usual or any convenient way. Around the main cylinder or swift 1 are arranged workers 2 3 in pairs. These workers are all driven at the same speed by the belt 4. Small stripper or angle rollers 5 5 are mounted in the angle between one worker of each pair and the swift 1. These rollers 5 5 assist in removing the surplus fiber from the workers 2 and place it on the swift 1. Thefiber is operated upon by each of the workers 2 3, the worker 3 on the right first removing it from the swift 1, after which the worker 2 removes it.fr0m the worker 3 and carries it around until it is taken again by the swift 1, which delivers it to the second worker 3, when the operation just described is repeated. The surplus fiber is removed from the workers 2 by the small stripper or angle rollers 5, which return it again to the swift.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United States, is

In a scribbler 0r carding-engine, the combination with a main swift,of workers grouped in pairs around said swift, and rotating in a direction opposite to the direction of said swift and at a less surface speed than said swift, and a small stripper-roller located in the angle between the swift and the rear of the first worker of each pair, whereby the material under treatment is stripped from the first worker and laid upon the swift, from whence the unopened portion is removed by the second worker, which carries it around itself until it is removed therefrom by the first worker, which again works it against the main swift, after which the operation is repeated, the surplus material passing on to the second pair of workers, substantially as described.
