Abstract

423,321. Opening, cleaning, and producing slivers. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, SHORTER, S. A., WILLIAMS, T. C., and LOCKE, J., Shirley Institute, Didsbury, Manchester. Nov. 25, 1933, No. 33002. [Class 120 (i)] Slivers, strips, or ends of cotton or other fibrous materials are produced by conveying the opened material in an air stream which is subdivided to convey the fibre in separate channels in spaced relationship, the fibre from these channels being separately collected into slivers, strips or ends, and further consolidated and forwarded. Preferably the fibre-conveying air stream is of streamline character such as that described in Specification 404,686, and in an apparatus employing such an air stream the cotton is fed by rollers 1, Fig. 1, over a delivery plate 2 to feed rollers 3, and thence presented to a rapidly revolving toothed beater 6, which projects the material in a finely divided condition into the chamber 7. A streamline flow of air is produced therein through the inlet 8 the cotton being carried forward to the cage 10 and trash deposited. The cage 10 co-operates with a roller 11 or with a second cage 11<a>, Fig. 4. The wall 13 of the chamber 7 extends to near the cage 10 while a streamer plate 14 is provided to assist the flow. The air stream is subdivided by thin vertical plates 16 fixed to the cover 17 fitting into rings 15 on the cage 10 and secured to the bar 18 which carries the adjustable stripping plate 19. The plates 16 extend into the nip 22 of the cage 10 and roller 11. The cage 10 is formed with a damper 20 while in the modification shown in Fig. 4, the cage 11<a> is formed with a damper 20<a>. In operation, the cotton and fine dust are carried on the subdivided air streams to the cage 10 the air and dust passing through the cage perforations and the cotton being condensed thereon in the form of narrow strips or ends. The ends may be passed by rollers 24 to drawing rollers 25 and there formed into slivers. The Provisional Specification describes also the interposition of a high speed dust cage of the type described in Specification 317,592, [Class 120 (i)], between the settling chamber and the sectionalized cage or cages.
