Abstract
23,564. Whiting, W. J. Oct. 15. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; breech actions, sliding barrel and breech-block.-Relates to automatic pistols and other small-arms of the kind having a sear-tripping bar passing along one side of the magazine, and consists (1), in providing an automatic safety device which acts directly on the sear-tripping bar and holds it out of engagement with the sear except when the weapon is gripped; and (2), in arranging a single spring to control both the safety and the magazine catch. The safety device may be either a slide or a lever arranged at the back of the grip. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the safety slide b has a projecting arm b<2> which terminates in an inclined ledge b<3> arranged to engage an incline c<1> on the tripping-bar c. When the safety slide is pressed rearwards by its spring f to the position shown in Fig. 1, the bar c is lowered out of engagement with the sear tail e<1>. The spring f also forms the spring of the magazine latch g, which, in the construction shown, is of the type described in Specification 1664/09. When the pistol is gripped, the slide b is pressed forwards to the position shown in Fig. 2, and the tripping-bar c is raised into its operative position by its spring. Instead of the incline b<3>, equivalent means of connexion between the safety slide and the tripping-bar may be used; and instead of the bar being restored to its operative position by its spring, it may be positively restored by the safety slide.
