Boxes; expansion, equalizing. - To ensure equal rapidity of expansion of inner and outer steam-pipes under rising temperature, the inner pipe is thickened, or grooves are formed on the inner face of the outer pipe to give increased heating-surface. The joint is made tight by a packing-ring c of comparatively small extent radially and axially, pressed by a gland d and bolts f. Instead of a complete flange on the outer pipe, a loose flange or ring i may be used, secured to the outer pipe a as shown, or by setscrews, or by forming the ring in two parts bolted together and engaging behind a shoulder on the pipe a. Instead of the loose ring, the pipe a may have projecting lugs, behind which the heads of the bolts engage, or the bolts screw into, or are secured by set-screws to, the lugs. In a modification, the joint is formed as a ball- and-socket joint.
