Ball-and-socket joints with bolts and flanges for steam - pipes comprise a cast - iron ball D into which one pipe screws, the inner end of the bore of the ball being flared as shown to preserve a full fluid-way. The ball is turned accurately to fit a gun-metal cup in two parts A, B, bolted together to form a tight joint without packing.
