12.583. Bowing, J. May 27. Retort furnaces.-Relates to the construction and arrangement of retorts, and to the method of heating and working them for the production of gas and gas coke. The retorts, which are constructed so that the volume of each side wall is equal to the internal volume of the retort, are heated intermittently in order that the walls of the retort may take up sufficient heat to complete the coking when the flame is extinguished. The temperature of the retort walls is raised to about 700‹ or 800‹ C. Each retort a is separated by a narrow flue from the wall of the retort chamber or from the adjacent retort, the flue being divided by vertical partitions. Below each retort is arranged a central channel d, supplied with gas which passes from a tube e through the metal or fire-clay cylinder shown in Fig. 1, the air passing through the passage around this cylinder. The products of combustion pass to the vertical flue at each side through passages g. The fuel is introduced, and the gas generated escapes, through an opening h, and the retort is discharged through openings i. Specification 24,687/06, [Class 55, Gas manufacture], is referred to.
