Abstract

23,983. Ray, E. Nov. 5. Regenerative retort furnaces.-Tar and similar substances are passed through a series of tubular retorts, so arranged that the temperature increases from the first to the last and that the fractions distilled from each retort may be collected separately. A jet of superheated steam may be passed into the last retort or into others of the series. Fig. 1 shows a partial front elevation and crosssection, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of apparatus heated by the secondary combustion of the products of a furnace, and comprising two batteries of retorts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The retorts are arranged sloping alternately in opposite directions. The heating arrangements are as follows : - Fuel, charged through the opening 16, is incompletely burnt on the grate 11, air being admitted through the adjustable port 14. The combustible gases produced pass through apertures 10 into the chamber 12, to which air is admitted through the inlet 17, apertures 17<x> <x>, and vertical conduits 55 between the hollow bricks 57. The products of the secondary combustion pass through horizontal conduits into a second chamber, and thence to the distributing-passage 13, which is provided with apertures 13x leading to the two flues respectively containing the end retorts 5 of each of the batteries. Each of the currents of heated gases traverses one of the zig-zag series of flues containing the retorts, and finally descends into the flue 52. The heating is regulated by means of registers 6 and air inlets 7, 17<x>, &c.
