Abstract

25,527. Koppers, H. Nov. 23. Coking.-In coke ovens provided with vertical heating-flues and air and gas supply from below, the heating-fines a, Fig. 1, are relatively fixed or anchored by the abutment or support g, which directly covers the flues. The support g is provided over each flue, preferably axially, with passages h, which may be adjustable by means of registers i. The products of combustion escape from the flues through the passages h into a horizontal passage k, and thence to a descending shaft l and into the chimney. The air passages d, Fig. 3, preferably run along below the coke chambers and communicate with chambers f surrounding the gas nozzles c. Passages n, closed by covers m, allow access to the nozzles. The nozzle c is disposed centrally in a conicallyflared nozzle stone, the outlet of which is of the smallest diameter allowing withdrawal of the nozzle. The furnace shown in Fig. 1 is adapted for the recovery of the byeproducts. The furnace shown in Fig. 5 is arranged for heating by the gases from the coke chambers, or by air and gas supply from below for recovery of the bye-products. The heating-flues a are divided into two groups by means of slides o. The flues of the one group receive the coke gases through passages q, and also air through a connection p, the passage k, and the passages h. The flues of the other group conduct the gases to the chimney. Communication apertures in the flue walls serve to regularize the gas production in the separate coke chambers. Cover plates r protect the nozzles c &c. A portion of the burnt gases may be drawn into the chimney through an opening t. In order to prevent displacements by expansion from heat, transverse joints of sufficient width are provided in the separate courses, so that horizontal displacement of the bond is permitted. Reference is made to Specifications No. 23,278, A.D. 1901, and No. 18,262, A.D. 1904.
