Abstract

16,825. Dempster &. Sons, R., and Toogood, H. J. July 22. Retort furnaces. - The flues of vertical gas retorts are arranged so that the maximum heat is applied at a position between the ends of the retorts. In the arrangement of the flnes shown in Fig. 1, gas passes from a flue 3 to burners 4, controlled by loose damper bricks 4<b>, and meets secondary air supplied through ports 4<a>. The gases pass downwardly between partitions 12, which may be perforated, to a flue 5 controlled, if desired, by dampers 6 and then pass upwardly through a flue 7 to a tortuous flue 9 controlled by a damper 8, finally escaping by a flue 10 leading to a regenerator. In the modification shown in Figs. 3, 5, and 6, gas from a producer 14 passes through flues 3 to burners 4, where it mixes with secondary air which enters a flue 15 surrounding ribbed extensions 16 of the retorts and passes to a regenerator 17 leading to flues 18 having delivery orifices 19. The combustion products pass upwardly through flues 22, controlled by dampers 23, to the chamber 24 and thence to the wastegas passages of the regenerator and the main flue 25. The descending stream of heating-gases, after passing the dampers 6, ascends a flue 7 and enters the chamber 24 leading to the regenerator and main flue 25. Primary air for the producer 14 enters the flue 20 surrounding the extension 16 of the retort and passes through the flues 21 to the producer.
