Starting-valves and starting-ports, auxiliary. -To lessen the consumption of steam in rolling- mill and other engines, the control of the engine when starting and stopping, is effected by throttling the steam, but during normal working is effected by varying the cut-off. The valve port is divided into two or more portions which are closed at different times, or modified controlling-edges may be provided in the main valve, Fig. 8<a>, or in a main valve and an auxiliary valve x, Fig. 9, or in both the main valve and the main passage, Fig. 8, or in the auxiliary valve and auxiliary passage. The auxiliary inlet conduit may be separated from the main port and may be closed during normal working by a separate valve S, Figs. 6 and 7, which is connected to the reversing-lever. The laps e<1>, i<1> of the auxiliary ports are less than the laps e, i of the main valve, or the valves, Fig. 9, may have different travels.
