Jet-wheels; reversing; regulating; leakage-preventing devices. - A rotor B, carrying radial blades, is divided into stages for compound working by annular partitions b, Fig. 2. Ports C, D in the casing are placed alternatively in connexion with inlet pipes E<1> or exhaust pipes E<2>, by means of interconnected valves E, Figs. 3 and 5, according to the direction of rotation required. The exhaust pipes of each stage lead to the opposite inlet port of the next succeeding stage. It is to be noted that Fig. 3 is a section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 1, i.e., the upper part of the Figure is a section of the upper part of the highpressure stage and the lower part of the Figure is a section of the lower part of the next stage. It will be seen that on each side of the turbine there are two sets of pipes E<1>, E<2>, one set en each side being idle according to the direction of rotation. The cross-section of the pipes and ports is preferably rectangular. There are two separate streams of motive fluid flowing through the turbine, each acting alternately on the upper and lower parts of succeeding stages. The nozzles areas may be adjusted by rotating the spindles of the valves E whereby the position of internal valves e<10>, Fig. 5, may be varied. In a modification, interconnected plug cocks in the pipes E<1>, E<2> are substituted for the slide valves E. In a further modification a non- reversible turbine is described. Leakage is prevented between stages by the provision of labyrinth packing at the peripheries of the partitions b.
