Abstract

12,998. Byrom, J. June 18. Gas and like engines.-An apparatus for moistening or oxygenating the air or combustible mixture comprises a chamber A containing water or some liquid such as sodium peroxide which will liberate oxygen, and a double series of baffles comprising corrugated plates X, Y arranged at right-angles to one another. The air or gas is drawn by the engine suction through pipes B dipping below the level of the liquid, and after traversing the baffleplates which complete the atomization, passes by the pipe C to the engine. The liquid is kept at a constant predetermined level in the vessel A by a float feed chamber D. This chamber has a removable top which permits the weighted float to be easily adjusted for varying the liquid level in the chamber. A small pipe connects the chamber A with the upper part of the chamber D to equalize the pressures therein. A detachable sump K is provided to enable the chamber to be cleansed at intervals, and a safety flap valve is fitted on the upper part of the chamber to prevent injury due to back-firing. The liquid may be heated by passing the exhaust round the pipe J. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the air is admitted by a pipe M into a bonnet instead of directly to the pipes B. The pipe M may be heated by the engine exhaust.
