17,393. Mitford, W. July 30. Rail joints.-The weakening of rail joints due to fish-bolt holes is obviated by a fish-plate box a and a fish-plate b tightened and held by a wedge or tapered 'bolt c. The fish-plates are of suitable material such as rolled or cast iron or steel, and stand clear of the web and bottom of the rail, and either the fishplate b or the open side of the plate a is made tapered to correspond with the wedge. The fishplate a is readily placed in position from underneath, and clearance is given between the rail and fish-plate bases.
