Abstract
300. Palmer, W. E. Feb. 20, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Rail joints of railway rails are formed by means of two members 4, one of which is shown detached in Fig. 4. Each member comprises a base flange 5, a covering-flange 6 and a yielding fishplate 8, which normally lies as shown in Fig. 2 before it is bolted up. The upper ends of the fisbplates have a rib 9 which, when the bolts 15 are tightened up, press against the webs of the rails and prevent the fishplates and webs from sticking together. Depending from the centre of the base flanges 5 are blocks 10 which are secured together by the bolts 13, and, to prevent them from becoming jammed between the contiguous edges of the sleepers, are bevelled at the corners 11. When the projections 9 on the fishplates have been made to contact with the webs of the rails, the nuts 16 can be still further tightened, to a limited extent, so as further to increase the spring pressure on the nuts and thus prevent them from working loose. The contiguous ends of the rails are bevelled so as to avoid jar and vibration when the car wheels are passing over them.
