Rail joints.-One side of the head at each end of the rail is cut away, as shown at b, Fig. 1, and the fish plate c, Figs. 3, 9, and 10, is formed with a projecting portion d to fit into the recess thus formed, Or, the recess may be made long enough to receive the whole of the upper part of the fishplate. The fishplates are shaped to fit against the web and over the base flange of the rail, and they are secured by bolts or rivets. Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show a railway rail joint and Figs. 9 and 10 a tramway rail joint.
