Abstract

23,404. Evans, J. T. Nov. 14. Rail joints ; rails.-The rails are formed with recesses 3, 5, at the ends of the head d and base flanges, which are engaged by shaped fish-plates 7 secured to the sleepers by spikes 11. These spikes pass through elongated . holes in the base flange of the rail to allow the latter to expand. A modified form of fish-plate has its vertical flange slightly curved inwardly to meet the correspondingly-shaped rail web. The slotted portions of each rail are of sufficient length to receive the. whole length of the fish-plates while the adjacent rail is placed in position. In a modified form, the rails are provided with slots in the base flange only, the upper ends of the fish-plates bearing against the heads of the rails in the usual manner.
