Rail joints.-A small plate 2<1> is used on the inside of the joint, and a plate 3, having its central portion of maximum thickness and equal in length to the plates 2<1>, is used on the outside. The ends of this plate are of channel section, the thickness of the vertical portion being gradually reduced towards the ends. A flange 4 extends under the rail foot for its full width, and a shoulder 5 on the plate 3 supports the rail head. The upper surface of the fish-plate is flush with the tread, and has a small lip 7 overlapping the rail head. Bolts secure the parts together.
