Abstract
22,503. Cuthbert, D. W. Oct. 19. Rails; rail joints.-Relates to rails having a separate head or tread portion, and means for securing the same. The tread portions A, shown in Figs. 1 and 4, fit on the heads of the main rails B, preferably so as to break joint therewith, and may be secured at intervals by bolts, plates, or cottars. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hooked top end of the bolt E engages with projecting lips D, and the bottom end passes through a hole in a plate F, or through the flange of a flat-bottomed rail. The projecting lips D may be made broad enough to allow the bolts to be passed through them, or the bolts may be formed with projections engaging holes in the sides of the tread portion A. Plates J, shown in Fig. 4, may be formed with projections K entering holes in the sides of the tread portion A, or may engage lips in a similar manner to the bolts E, or may be riveted or fastened to the flanges C. The plates fit, and are bolted to, the web of the main rail B, and when placed at the joints of the main rail may be shaped to fit over the usual fishplates, or may be made in one with them. The lower ends of the plates may be formed with horizontally-projecting lugs secured by bolts to the foot of a flat-bottomed rail or to a separate plate placed underneath the main rail. According to another modification, the tread portion may be secured by cottars passing through the head of the main rail, and through both the depending flanges.
