Abstract

28,713. Roberts, F. F. Dec. 31. Sleepers; rails; securing to sleepers.-Metal sleepers are made of two similar bars 1, 2, Fig. 3, provided with flanges 4, 5 and secured together by bolts 14, thus forming a socket 9 for a bolt 8, Fig. 1, passing through the rail web, the flanges 5 being recessed to form a rail seat. A pad 13 is provided, and the rail is held by wedges 15. To lengthen the sleepers and give them a greater bearing, the flanges 4 are tapered at their ends, and are fitted with plates 16, having flanges 17 embracing the sleeper, and an anchoring-end 18. Bolts 19, Fig. 2, pass through holes in the sleeper and slots in the plate for further security. The sleeper may be adapted to take three or more rails, and one bolt 8 may be used in place of two or more. An irregular nut 11 is preferred. On bridges, the plate 16 may be dispensed with, and the sleeper directly anchored by spikes or bolts.
