Chairs; sleepers; rail joints.-Relates to a device for supporting railway or tramway rails at their joints and other convenient points in their lengths, so that they can be adjusted in a vertical direction. Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation, and Fig. 2 a sectional plan of a rail joint. The rails a, contiguous ends of which may be joined by fishplates of the type shown in which, if desired, the ends of the tie rods c are utilized as bolts, are laid upon sole-plates d below which is the foundation plate e laid within, or upon, a concrete or other road bed. Screwed into, and through, the plate d, on opposite sides of the rail, are bolts f which can be engaged and rotated from the road surface so as to raise the plate d and rail as desired. The screws are protected by casings g having lids h, filled with grease or other substance. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which ordinary fishplates are used, and modified casings g are provided, which are adapted to engage with the screws and act as lock-nuts. Each plate d may have two or more screws on both sides of the rail, or a separate plate may be used to support each rail end. If desired, ribs, adapted to fit closely against the flanges, may be formed on the plates d. In another modification, the plate d may be solidly supported on one side of the rail, and be provided with screws on the other side only.
