Abstract

Feb. 14, 1918 Chairs; rail joints, bridge; sleepers, pot; tie-bars. - A railway sleeper is formed of two concrete members A, Figs. 1 and 2, connected by a tie-bar C arranged so that the distance between the members A can be adjusted to suit the gauge of the rails B. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the adjustment is effected by means of a dowel-pin D<1> passing upwardly through the concrete member A and engaging an elongated slot C' in the tie-bar, packing C<2> being employed to fill up the unoccupied portion of the slot. In another construction, the tie-bar passes completely through the transverse arms A<1> of the members A and has nuts threaded on to its ends bearing against the outer sides of the arms. The outer transverse arms A<1> is preferably longer than the inner one, and the longitudinal arms A<2> of adjacent sleepers are arranged to abut, the abutting portions being curved in vertical section. In order to adjust the rail chair E vertically, two wedge-shaped blocks G, G<1>, preferably with an additional parallel block F, are arranged between the concrete member and the chair, and one or both of the blocks G, G<1> have elongated holes for the passage of the securing bolts H<1> Spikes G<2> may further assist in retaining the blocks in any relative position. At a rail-joint, adjacent sleepers are made integral by means of a connexion arm A<3>, Figs. 7 and 8, and the joint is supported by adjustable wedge-shaped blocks J, J<1> arranged similarly to the blocks G, G<1>, but with a flat metal bearing-plate L for the flanged or unflanged fish-plates K to bear against.
