7857. Newburg, J. I. April 16. Sleepers ; chairs; rail joints.-The sleeper is of trough section with a bent-down end b and notches d cut in the top of the sides near the end as shown in Fig. 4. A chair C, Fig. 5, is placed across inside the sleeper, and the rails resting on it are secured by their flanges taking under the side e of the notch d and under the lugs k on the chair. A key D is passed through the side f of the notch d and over the lugs l on the chair to secure the parts together. The key is secured by a cottarp. Two other forms of chair, which are bent from plain rectangular blanks, are also described ; one is of #-section, and the other of box section. The rail ends are cut square in the foot and web and at an angle across the head, as shown in Fig. 8, to form a lap joint, and one fishplate E may be of double angle form, so as to lie between the sides of the sleeper to prevent creep.
