Abstract

15,523. Robotham, A. E. July 5. Perambulators, children's mail-carts, and like vehicles.-Relates to folding perambulators, mailcarts, and similar carriages or vehicles, in which the sides are connected by hinged end pieces and held in their open position by a bottom piece which maybe hinged to one side. The sides 1, 2 are attached to frames 3, 4 carrying wheel springs 5, 6. Short axles 8 are mounted on the springs, and have feet shaped to receive the ends of jointed stays 9 capable of opening outwards. The sides are connected by end pieces 11 hinged together in the centre so as to open inwards and kept in their extended position by a bottom piece 12, which is hinged to the side 1, and adapted to fold down over the frame 4. Flaps 14, 15 are hinged to an opening in the piece 12 and fold down to form a well, the bottom 17 of which is hinged to the frame 4. The handles are fitted with metal caps 18, 19, Fig. 4, to the former of which a cross-bar 20 is hinged. The other end of the bar 20 is shaped to enter a slot in the cap 19, where it is retained by a spring-pin 21. The frame 3 has a spring plate 22 to hold the cross-bar when the perambulator is folded. In a modification, the pieces 12, 17 may be loose and provided with bolts, spring catches, &c. for holding them in position. The end pieces 11 may also open outwards, in which case they have one or more locking- bars. A cushion mounted on a piece of wood for covering the opening in the bottom 12 is provided to form with the end cushions a bed on the bottom of the vehicle, and is preferably of such a size that it can be placed in the bottom of the well to hold the flaps 14, 15 in position. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the bottom piece may be hinged in the centre ; that the ends may be made from a textile fabric and provided with hinged stretching-struts ; and that when applied to mail-carts, the foot-rest may be divided and hinged similarly to the back.
