ROCKING AND ROCKING-ARRESTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters IPatent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1. 115.
Application filed January 22, 1815. Serial No. 3,715.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, OSCAR S. MIERS and EDWARD E. GnNsLnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Booking and Rocking-Arresting Device, of which the following is a specification,
Our invention consists of a combined childs carriage and cradle, and has for its object the conveniences of two necessary articles for the care of children, while the cost of two and the space required for the two is lessened and all of the advantages thereof are retained, and the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,
' Figure 1 is a plan of a vehicle with a. body mounted thereon, which body serves as a cradle, the bottom being broken through. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the wheels nearest the observer being omitted. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the inside of the forward bolster and its attachments. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the outside of the rear bolster and springs, the body and wheels being omitted. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the bolsters inclosed within their spacing stirrup.
Similar numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
1, indicates axles of a childs carriage; 2, wheels thereon; 8, springs mounted upon the axles; 4, tie rods extending one to a pair of springs, each side of the vehicle for spac ing the axles apart and connecting the springs upon the forward axle to those upon the rear axl; 5, the lower member of the bolster; 6, the upper member, these being preferably formed of wood and the lower member secured to the upper ends of the side springs 3 with rivets 7 S and 9 are upper and lower rocker members formed of band spring metal, and hav ing each a convex rocking surface with its ends returned toward each other, which ends are secured to the bolster with fastening rivets 7. 10 is a stirrup for spacing the bolster members apart and holding the rocker members in contact.
11 is a box or cradle member mounted upon the upper holsters and secured thereto with screws 12. This box may be of any desired form as the taste of the maker decides upon.
The several parts being assembled in position and the two pairs of rocker members compressed slightly between the bolster members by means of the stirrup 10, an easy transverse rocking movement can be produced by an attendant and the desired benefits of a cradle secured.
For arresting the rocking movement, which will be desirable when the vehicle is being moved from one place to another, frames are hinged'to the lower member 6 with hinges 18, each consisting of two end pieces 14 and a rail 15. The rails are each provided with an car 16, to which an operating rod 17 is connected at the forward rail, and to the rear rail by means of a link 18, which is connected to the rod 17 at 19, the link 18 having a link 20 extending from it to the rear rail 15.
Extending downward from the rear bol ster members is an arm 21, having a slot 22, through which the rod 17 and link 18 can freely move. Upon the outer end of the rod 17 a handle 23 is hinged at 24, it having at its lower end a notch 25 for engaging with the lower end of the arin 21 and holding the rails 15 in engagement with the under side of the body 11 and arresting its rocking movement. From the free end of the link 18, a spring 26 extends to and is connected to the rear bolster member 6 and assists in the operation of the rod 17. The ends 14, rails 15, rod 17, and links 18 and 20, as shown in heavy lines by their position, arrest the rocking movement of the box 11, but in their position in dotted lines permit it to proceed. These swinging frames may be single or in pairs as desired.
No claim is made to the vehicles construction as such.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s,
1. A rocking device, consisting of two pieces of rigid material of a length greater than that of the rocking members spaced and held intermediate their ends at a determined distance apart, two rocln'ng members of spring band metal of similar form and dimensions, the ends of eachmember being bent and returned toward each other and secured to one of the aforesaid spaced apart members with the intermediate surface of said rocking members made convex and arranged in contact with each other and slightly compressed, one upon the other.
2. A rocking device, consisting of two pieces of rigid material of a length greater being bent and returned toward each other and secured to one of the aforesaid spaced apart members with the intermediate-,-su-rface of said rocking members made convex andarranged in contactwitheaiahothemand shghtlycompressed, Onenpon; the other -a'nd arocking-,movement;arrest1ng device, 1* consisting' ofa hinged swinging frame having two ends and a connecting, rail,-- -said -rail. ;be
- ingv varranged in; the direction of the; lane in which ,the mocking imovement is eing made and adapted to engage the lower side of the part being rocked when said ends are swung into a nearly --vertica1 position.
3. In a rocking device, a rocking movement preventitive consisting of a swinging frame normally disengaged from the part tobe rocked and arranged toswing in a iplanezat rightmngles with the plane of the rocking movement and to be engaged with the part being rocked for preventing the flocking-movement. i 'OSCAR 'S-"MIERS.
