Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LINDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Running-Gears for Childrens Carriages and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n running gear for childrens carriages and the like.
.The main objects of this invention are: first, to provide an improved running gear, the parts of which may be economically produced and assembled and at the same time the'structure is very rigid.
Second, to provide an improved running gear which may be shipped in the knockdown if desired and easily set up by comparatively inexperienced persons. I
Third, to provide an improved. running gear that is comparatively light in weight and is very strong. 7
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention s clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the body of the carriage, it being shown conventionally. My improved running gear comprises the rear axle 2, the front axle 3, and the side members at. The side members are of U-shaped or channel cross section disposed facing downwardly. At their rear ends the side members are provided with transversely curved portions 5 providing cylindrical sockets for the handle members 6. Below these socket portions are downwardlv projecting lugs 7 and 8, the lu s being iritegral with the side members. etwccn the pairs of lugs are laterally facing downwardlyprojecting axle seats 9. These axle seats are struck out or formed from the sides of the side members, as shown. The axle 10 is disposed in these seats transversely of the side members. The handle members v6 are disposed in the sockets and extend forwardly above the axle. Springs 11 are disposed upon the'side members. I
i provide spring clips comprising pairs of members 12 embracing the sidemembers and secured to the lugs by the rivets 13.v Clamping bolts 14: are provided for clamping the spring clips upon the springs as shown in Fig. IV. Axle clips 15 are secured on the under sides of the axle by means of the rivets 16 and the rear ends of these clips are engaged over the bolts 14, being hooked at 1'? as shown in Fig. IV. Bolts 18 are disposed vertically through the springs, side members, the handle members and the front ends of the axle, see Fig. IV. Clamping bolts 19 are arranged through the lugs 7and 8 clamping them upon the handle members. The front axle 3 is secured to the front springs 20 and the front ends of the side members l by means of suitable bolts but as these details form no part of this invention they are not further illustrated herein.
Vith this arrangement of parts I provide a structure in which the parts are very economical to produce and at the same time one which is strong and rigid. The structure may be shipped with the handle removed or with the running gear in the knockdown if desired and readily and conveniently set up without special tools and by persons not specially skilled. I
I have illustrated my improvements in the form in which I have embodied them in practice. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent 1s:
1. In a running gear, the combination of side members of U-cross section disposed facing downwardly and having portions at their rear ends providing handle sockets and downwardly projecting pairs of lugs and laterally projecting downwardly facing axle seats, an axle disposed in said axle seats, handle 'members disposed in said handle sockets, springs disposed upon said side members, spring clips disposed to embrace said side members and secured thereto by rivets through the rear pairs of lugs, axle clips secured on the under slde of the axle and disposed with their rear ends engaged over said rivets, bolts disposed vertically through. said springs, side members, handle members and the front ends of said axle clips, and clamping bolts disposed through said lugs. In a running gear, the combination of a channeled side member disposed facing downwardly and adapted at its rear end to receive a handle member and having a downwardly facing axle seat, an axle disposed in said axle seat, a handle member disposed in the rear end of said side member, a spring disposed on said side member, a spring clip mounted on said side member and secured tl creto by a rivet, an axle clip engaged with said rivet, a clamping bolt disposed vertically through said spring, side member, handle member and said axle clip, and a bolt clamping said side member upon said handle member.
6. In arunning gear, the combination of a channeled side member disposed facing downwardly and adapted at its rear end to receive a handle member and having a downwardly facing axle seat, an axle disposed in said axle seat, a handle member disposed in the rear end of said side member, an axle clip, a clamping bolt disposed vertically through said side. member, handle member and said axle clip, and a bolt clamping said side member upon said handle member.
7. In a running gear, the combination of a channeled side member disposed facing downwardly and having a downwardly facing axle seat, an axle disposed in said axle seat, a spring disposed on said side member, a spring clip mounted on said side member and secured thereto by a rivet, an axle clip engaged with said rivet, a clamping bolt disposed vertically through said spring, side member and said axle clip, and a bolt clamping said side member upon said handle member.
