Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 21, 1921. Serial No. 438,988.

To all whom z't may concern:

Be it known that I, HARVEY J. LoIsELLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chippewa Falls, in the county of Chippewa and btate of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Clilds Coaster Wagon; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relatesy to vehicles and more particularly to toy wagons whereby children may coast and at all times have the device under control so as to properly steer to avoid collision with objects and enable a deviated course to be followed.

The invention vprovides a childs wagon having an open bottom, preferably of slats,

front and rear axles firmly braced, and a handle having pivotal connection with the front axle and adapted to extend rearwardly over the bottom to provide convenient and positive steering means.

The. invention furthermore provides a wheeled toy simple and light in structure and durable so as to withstand hard usage and enable the same to be eiectively controlled by a child'.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.

Vhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet diilerent conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details oi construction may be resorted to without depart-ing from the nature of the invention.

rlhe vehicle comprises a bottom `or bed l which is preferably of open structure comprising a plurality of longitudinally disposed slats. Cross pieces 2 connect the slats and form reinforcing means therefor. Front bolsters 3 and rear holsters 4: are provided for supporting the front and rear axles, respectively, and are connected to the bed or bottom in any substantial and convenient way. A forwardly extending reachl or brace 5 constitutes a stay for the rear bolster 4i. Oppositely disposed braces 6 stiften and stay the front bolster. The rear axle 7 supports the bolster 4t and is con nected thereto in any manner. rIhe rear axle 7 is fixed and' is provided with supporting wheels in any suitable way. The front axle 8 is pivoted and has a king bolt connection with the bolster 3 so as to turn for proper steering.

A handle 9 is connected at one end by means of curved strap irons l0 with the forward ends of hounds l1 which are connected to the front axle 8. The hounds 1l consist of strap irons which are attached at their lower ends to the extremities of the axle 8 and incline upwardly and forwardly and have the lower ends of the strap irons l0 pivotally connected thereto by means of the i'astenings l2. The curved connections l0 admit of the handle 9 extending over the bed of the vehicle. This provides for positive and safe control of the wagon when coasting. The handle also provides convenient means for drawing the wagon in a manner well understood.

A device constructed in accordance with the present invention provides a wagon specially adapted for children since it is light, strong and durable and capable of being controlled at all times with safety to the child. The structure is such as to admit of the vehicle being cheaply manufactured.

It is also noted that the wagon is light, strong, durable and compact, the handle falling back and lying close on the body so that the device may be conveniently handled and carried upon a street car, automobile or other vehicle. The wagon is also quiet and smooth running.
