TONGUE SUPPORT FOR VEHICLES.

This invention relates to a tongue support for vehicles and more particularly to means for limiting the swinging motion of the tongue or handle of a toy wagon relatively to the front of the wagon and thus prevent the tongue from striking the ground when swung forwardly into a position for pulling the wagon or striking the body when the tongue is swung into a backwardly folded position while using the wagon for coasting. it is the object of this invention to provide means for thus limiting the swinging motion of the tongue or handle which are simple, efficient and do not appreciably increase the cost of the vehicle In the accon'ipanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the front part of the running gear of a toy wagon equipped with my improvement.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the front part of a toy wagon provided with my in vention.

Similar characters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.

The numeral 10 represents the body of a toy wagon, 11 the front holster secured to the underside of the same, and 12 the front axle arranged below the front bolster and provided at its opposite ends with Wheels 30 which are mounted to turn thereon in any suitable and approved manner.

The axle is pivotally connected with the holster so as to be capable of turning l1ori aontally by means which preferably consist of an upper truss 13 having a depressed central part and elevated ends secured to the bolster, a lower truss 14 having an elevated central part and depressed ends secured to the axle, upper and lower fifth-wheel disks 15, 16, engaging with each other and secured respectively to the opposing central parts of the upper and lower trusses, and a vertical. hing bolt 17 passing through the holster, and upper and lower trusses and disks.

The means for pulling the wagon as shown in the accompanying drawings comprise two forwardly converging axle hounds 18, 18 which are pivoted at their rear ends on the axle and have their front ends connected by a cross bar 19, a tongue or handle 20, and two tongue hounds 21 having their front ends connected with the rear end of the Serial No. 126,362.

tongue and their rear ends pivotally connected with the front parts of the axle hounds by a horizontal transverse pin 22.

The axle bounds are maintained in a definite angular position relatively to the body and axle by a longitudinal brace 23 which is connected at its front end with the cross bar of the axle hounds and at its rear end with the lower end of said king bolt.

The means which are provided for limiting the forward and backward swinging motion of the tongue in accordance with my invention consist of a longitudinal stop bar 24 secured at its front end to the axle hound cross bar and connected at its rear end with the bolster and king bolt and provided at its front end with a stop lug 25 which projects forwardly from the axle hound cross bar and provided in rear of said cross bar with an upwardly projecting stop oif-set 26.

Upon swinging the tongue or handle into its foremost position the same engages the front stop 25, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the tongue is held from striking the ground and ready to be grasped for pushing or pulling the wagon. Upon swinging the tongue baekwardly until it engages the rear stop formed by the offset 26, as shown by full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby preventing the tongue or handle from striking the body and also retaining the handle in a. position which permits of steering the wagon when using the same for coasting.

These means for stopping the tongue or handle are exceedingly simple in construction, the same operate very effectively, are not liable to get out of order, and do not apneciably increase the cost of the vehicle.

As shown in the drawings the front end of the stop 25 is rounded off by curling or bending this edge downwardly, thereby pre venting this stop, upon engaging any object, from injuring or mar-ring the same as for instance when this wagon is drawn around a room in a house containing furniture.

I claim as my invention In a vehicle, a bolster, an axle pivotally connected with the bolster, axle hounds pivoted at their rear ends on said axle and having their front ends connected by a cross bar, a tongue, tongue hounds connected with said tongue and pivotally connected with the axle hounds, and a stop bar connecting the bolster with the cross bar of said axle hounds and having a lug projecting forwardly from 5 said cross bar and an upwardly pro ecting ofi-set in rear of said cross bar, said lug and ofli-set forming front and rear stops which MARTIN B.
