FOLDING BABY-CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,718, dated August 23, 1887,

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that L'CHARLES HALLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Baby- Garriage, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to folding baby car riages, and has for its object to produce an improvement in the construction of the babycarriage for which Letters Patent No. 340,7 79 were granted me April 27, 1886, and also the baby-carriage allowed to me July 21, 1886, Serial No.206,473, wherein the carriage will be simpler in construction, lighter, less liable to disarrangement, and more convenient in use.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved carriage, and Fig. 2 a plan view with the body removed, illustrating the attachment of the handle. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof, the handle being in section; and Fig. 4;, a side elevation of the carriage folded. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the lock-nut employed in connection with the canopy.
In carrying out my invention I employ th usual four wheels, 1, mounted upon axles 2 and 3, the forward axle, 2, being made shorter than the rear axle, 3, and both axles provided at their ends, inside the said wheel-hubs, with metallic collars 4, upon which collars the curved ends of arched reach-bars 5 are made to rest. The arched reach-bars 5, which are adapted to extend at the sides from axle to axle in the same horizontal plane, are preferably constructed of a single piece of metal, carrying the same thickness from its forward curved end, 6, to the commencement of the rear curve thereof. From thence to the extremity of the rear curved end, 7, the bars are about one-half the thickness of the forward portion. At the said point of reduction ahinge, 8, is produced upon the under face of the reach-bars, the top face thereof being in all cases perfectly smooth, and a leaf, 9, forming a part of said hinge of the same thickness and contour as the rear curved end, 7, is folded beneath and parallel with said rear end, thus producing a reach-bar of the same thickness throughout, having one hinged or folding end. The reachbars may, if found desirable, be constructed of two or more continuous leaves, the same being riveted or otherwise attached, and a hinge formed from the lower rear leaf of the bar.
The forward curved ends, 6, of the reachbars 5 are secured upon the collars 4 of the forward axle, 2, by bolts 10 passing through said collars and the axle, being held in engagement therewith by suitable nuts, the attachment of the rear curved ends of said bars being each effected by a bolt, 11, preferably made integral or connected with the hinged leaf 9, which bolt is formed with a flat apertured upwardlyprojectingportiou,12 adapted to enter a slot in the reduced curved end 7 of the reach-bar, while the lower portion of said bolt is projected through the collars 4 and rear axle, '3, and fastened in similar manner to the bolt 10 of the front axle. A pin, 13, is now passed through the aperture in the upper end, 12, of the bolt 11, above the curved end 7 of the reach-bars, to hold the said bars in secure yet partially detachable contact with its said rear axle.
The side reach-bars, 5, are provided with a central transverse brace, 14, attached at each end to the under face of the bars by a bolt, 15, which, projecting upward, is made with a more or less flat upper surface, 16, together with an aperture near the top. Upon the central upper surface, 17, of the reach-bars 5, which is usually flattened, a block, 18, is fast ened by the aforesaid bolt 15, and upon said block, also secured in position by said bolt, horizontal side springs, 19, are secured to extend rearward over the rear axle, where they are provided with a lug, 20, upon their upper face near the rear downwardly-curved under portion of said springs. A clamp, 21, is made to slide over the leaves of said springs, having a central set-screw to regulate the tension,
as provided in my allowed application above referred to.
At the front of the carriage S-springs 22 are secured upon the reach-bars by the same bolt,
10, employed to attach said reach-bars to the front axle. The body 23 is attached to the front S-springs, 22, and the rear horizontal bar-springs, 19, in like manner to the carriage shownf and claimed in my allowed applicationthat is, transversely to the under portion of the body at the front and rear rockers 24. are securely attached, and centrally said rockers, by means of a set-screw, 25, transverse arched bars 26 are secured, the front arched bar having at the ends thereof apertured lugs 27, adapted to enter slots in the S-springs 22, being retained in such connection by detachable pins 28, While the rear arched bars, 26, have their ends bent downward and pivoted to the lugs 20 upon the barsprings 19.
A handle, 29, which may be made in one piece, having central slots at the ends, may be entered either from the front or rear over the flattened surface 16 of the central bolt, 15, and be detachably secured thereon by a pin, 30, passed through the aperture in said bolt. The attachment of the handle being made central, the weight is more easily carried than if the attachment were made at either end.
As a support for the canopy 31, I attach to the body of the carriage, to the rear of the center, brackets 32, and pass through the arch of said brackets a bolt, 33, having a square aperture, 34, cut therein, and a fiat inner head, 35, providing said bolt with a thumb-nut, 36, as shown in Fig. 5. I now pass the members of a four-sided U-shaped bar, 36, having a pivot-pin, 38, adjustably secured at the top by a set-screw, through the square apertures 34 of the aforesaid bolts 33, securing said bar in any desired position by means of the thumb-screws 36. The canopy stick 39, provided with a tubular extension, 40, is now placed in position upon the U-barby theintroduction of the pivot-pin 38 into the said tubular extension 40.

1. The combination, with a reach-bar having its forward end attached to the front axle of a carriage and its rear end provided with a hinged leaf secured to the rear axle, of springs secured upon said reach-bar, and a carriagebody supported upon said springs, substantially as shown and described, and for the pur pose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with an arched reachbar having its forward end attached to the front axle of a carriage and its rear end provided with a hinged leaf secured to the rear axle, of springs secured to said reach-bar at the forward end and centrally of the same, and a carriage-body detachably supported by the front springs and adjustably supported by the centrally-attached springs, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The combination, with an arched reachbar having its forward end fastened to the front axle of a carriage and its rear end provided with a hinged leaf secured to the rear axle by a bolt attached to said leaf, the said bolt entering an aperture in the rear end of said reach bar, and a pin passed transversely through the bolt above the bar, of springs supported upon said bar, and carriage-body supported upon said springs detaohably at the front and adj ustably at the rear, substantially as shown and described.
4-. The combination, with an arched reachbar having its forward end fastened to the front axle of a carriage and its rear end provided with a hinged leaf secured to the rear axle,and springs supported upon said reach-bar, of an apertured bolt centrally attached to said bar, a detachable handle provided with apertured ends, and a pin adapted to pass through said bolt above the ends of said handle, substantially as shown and described.
