Abstract

11,479. Soc. Anon. Fiat - Muggiano. Nov. 1, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Submarine vessels.-Comprises a form of hull for submarine vessels designed to reduce resistance to propulsion and to reduce the alteration of water pressure in the torpedo tubes, when turning, to a minimum. The hull in plan is of the usual cigar shape, while in elevation the deck A is flat and has an almost straight longitudinal profile until near the ends, when the hull converges to a vertical straight line. At places in the hull where torpedo tubes meet the external surface, an inward curve G .is formed, so that by reason of the boat's hull projecting over the mouth of the launching-tubes, no dangerous alteration of pressure takes place within the tube during lateral movements of the vessel. The internal structure of the vessel, shown in half transverse section in Fig. 9, consists of two elastic arches H, I connected on the line 1-1, and strengtheiied by pillars 3. The exterior of the arched members is plated, and the spaces between the upper arch and the deck are utilized as ballast tanks.
