Abstract
23,680. Hunter, G. B. Oct. 24. Hulls; sectional vessels; tanks. - Sectional ships are constructed with detachable buoyant side portions extending to the bottom of the hull, to adapt them for passage through locks and canals of smaller dimensions than t h e ships. The width of the main portions a, b, Figs. 1 and 2, of the hull is determined by the available width of the canals and locks, the sides are sloped to correspond with the lock walls, and the bottom c is made double and utilized for water ballast. The side portions d, e are adapted to form waterballast tanks, and also to be detached when it is desired to float the vessel in sections through the lock. The main parts of the ship are temporarily secured by bolts, rivets, &c., the various parts being separated when required by careening. Curved portions f, g, secured in recesses h, form detachable continuations of the sides. In order that the parts d, e may float, a coffer-dam z and float j may be employed. The parts a, b are trimmed to an even keel by admitting water to the double bottoms. Web frames t and doublings u are fitted to the decks and sides where the main parts a, b are united, and a special keelson v is also fitted at this part of the ship. After passing through the canal, the various parts are permanently assembled together.
