Abstract

19,362. Wheless, T. H. Sept. 25. Hulls.-The hull of a vessel is made with a draught greater than the beam, which is narrow in comparison with the length. The draught increases from the bow B to the waist, and a wedge-shaped edge is presented to the water at every point. The stern C is full and comparatively shallow, being waterborne when moving. The boat floats at the water-line W-W in cruising condition, and the deck is curved upwards towards the midship section. The propeller E is driven by machinery placed low down in the waist of the boat to obtain a direct thrust. The lower part H of the waist is weighted by a solid keel or removable weight. In a modification having more freeboard buoyancy, chambers are provided at each side of the waist portion. These chambers project from the sides and taper into the hull fore and aft. Diving - rudders G are fitted and also a closed conning-tower D, so that the vessel may be used as a submarine boat.
