Abstract

20,281. Fauber, W. H. Sept. 26. Hulls.-The V- shaped hydroplane members described in Specification No. 7834, A.D. 1908, are modified so that the surfaces b, Fig. 1, have a different rearward inclination at the centre or keel line than at the sides, as shown, for example, in Fig. 3<a>. The lateral angle of inclination gradually increases from stem to stern, the forward hydroplane member merging into the keel so as to provide a centreboard effect. The hull towards the stern narrows above the rear hydroplane member b<8>, as shown in Fig. 4. The hydroplanes are designed to operate at a considerable depth, an even supply of water being thereby supplied to propellers p, the tubes h of which are located on a semicircular ledge at the stern formed by the contours d projecting downwards and rearwards to meet the upwardly curved extension e of the keel. Propellers may also be arranged beneath the hydroplane surfaces, while the engines r may be located at the offsets n of the hydroplane surfaces. Air tubes s, which extend from the bottom of the boat and pass out through the sides of the hull at a point above the water level, are provided with cowls s<2>. The air tubes s may be used to ventilate the ship, and by connexion with the funnels and boiler-room the smoke may be conducted beneath the bottom of the vessel. Grooves t may also be provided on the sides of the vessel and across the hydroplane surfaces to increase the supply of air and further reduce friction.
